MODIFIED TENTS BY OFB

What’s in news?

The Ordnance Factory Board is ready with a low cost isolation units ‘modified tents’.

Key data’s:

  • Developed by: Inorder to increase infrastructure for isolation and quarantine facilities to contain the spread of coronavirus, a two-bed tent with necessary medical facilities was developed by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
  • Available infrastructure: These modified tents can be set up in any place additionally with the conventional hospitals in very short span of time and developed within four or five days of research.
  • Purpose: These modified tents serve the following purpose – screening, isolation and quarantine of the patients.
  • Area: These tents covers an area of 55 square metre are made up of waterproof fabric, mild steel and aluminium alloy.
  • Cost: These tents are being assembled at Ordnance Factory Kanpur and are 30 per cent cheaper than tents used for military purposes.
  • Hand Sanitizers: The OFB also working in the production of Hand Sanitizers. As of now, it has delivered;
    • 3,564 litres from Ordnance Factory in Aruvankadu, Tamil Nadu.
    • 3,000 litres from the regional branches Itarsi in Madhya Pradesh and Bhandara in Maharashtra.
  • Nodal agency: The HLL (Lifecare Limited) has been appointed as the nodal agency by the GoI for centralized procurement of hand sanitizers.

About Ordnance Factory Board (OFB):

  • Established year: The world’s 37th largest defence equipment manufacturer, the OFB has been established in 1712 – also known as the Fourth Arm of Defence, Force behind the Armed Forces of India.
  • HQ: Its headquarters located at Kolkata.
  • Responsible Ministry: It functions under the Department of Defence Production of Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
  • Functions: OFB involves in research, development, production, testing, marketing and logistics of a comprehensive product range in the areas of air, land and sea systems and responsible for manufacturing small arms, missiles, rocket launchers, chemicals, explosives, mines, grenades, anti-tank warfare, etc.
  • Ordnance Factory Day: The foundational day is being celebrated on March 18th of every year since 1801.
