Why in news about Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet propulsion based missile system ?

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)successfully flight tested the second indigenously developed ‘Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR)’ propulsion based missile system, from ITR, Chandipur, Odisha.

About  Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet propulsion based missile system :

  • Ground booster, separation of ground booster and Nozzle-less-booster performance were found satisfactory.
  • Besides, Missile was guided to high altitude to simulate aircraft release conditions and subsequently nozzle-less-booster was ignited.
  • SFDR based missile accelerated to achieve ramjet Mach number successfully.
  • Moreover, The trajectory was tracked by telemetry and radar stations till touchdown. All the mission objectives have been met.
  • The success of SFDR propulsion technology is a significant milestone and will pave the way for development of long range air-to-air missiles in the country.
  • SFDR uses a ramjet propulsion system to react with the solid propellant as air, that acts as oxidizer flows through a solid propellant duct.
  • The design of the SFDR propulsion allows for throttling up and down, enabling the missile to increase the speed as it reaches the terminal phase of the flight, or when sharp turns are required in pursuit of highly maneuvering targets.
  • Compared to conventional rockets that must carry a propellant and oxidizer – Ramjet, like a jet engine, uses the air as an oxidizer thus eliminates the weight of that fuel.
  • Therefore, such missile can carry more fuel or use a smaller propulsion unit.
  • With more fuel stored on board, longer burn time is achieved, resulting in higher velocity, that enabling missiles to fly farther and maintain good kinematic performance through the endgame, being able to chase a target through a series of high G maneuvers.
  • Relying on solid propellant the system avoids flameout risk through such maneuvers, that jets engines or ramjets are subjected to.



  • It will help both India’s surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles to perform better and enhance their strike range, making them more lethal.
  • With it, India can have fastest long-range missiles in two categories, providing full-fledged and multi-layered aerial protection from hostile attacks.
  • Its successful use in missiles will mark India’s entry into select club of nations that use next-generation missile technology against manoeuvring targets, compromising effectiveness of conventional missiles.

What is ramjet?

  • Ramjet is a form of air-breathing jet enginethat uses the vehicle’s forward motion to compress incoming air for combustion without a rotating compressor.
  • Moreover, Fuel is injected in the combustion chamber where it mixes with the hot compressed air and ignites.
  • A ramjet-powered vehicle requires an assisted take-off like a rocket assist to accelerate it to a speed where it begins to produce thrust.
