Why in news ?

In the proposal for bird sanctuary in Manipur , there are many restrictions from the Bishnupur district villages . Because the livelihood problems affects the people by  proposal for bird sanctuary in areas of Manipur .

Background :

Loktak Lake

  • Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and is famous for the phumdisfloating over it.
  • Phumdis are the heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matter at various stages of decomposition.
  • Keibul Lamjao National Parkis also one of Phumdis in the lake.
  • It is only floating national park in world and is last natural refuge of endangered Sangai deer.
  • This ancient lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur.
  • It serves as a source of water for irrigation, drinking water supply and hydropower generation.
  • Considering the ecological status and its biodiversity values,  Wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention listed Loktak lake in 1990.
  • Later  Montreux Record listed loktak lake  in 1993.
  • Human activity has led to severe pressure on the lake ecosystem.

Sangai /Dancing deer/Brow-Antlered Deer :

  • Floating marshy grasslands, Phumids, of the Keibul Lamjao National Park, located in the southern parts of the Loktak Lake (largest freshwater lake in eastern India)
  • Phumdi — floating mass of entangled vegetation formed by the accumulation of organic debris and biomass with soil

  • Sangai is interpreted as the binding soul between humans and the nature
  • Socially, the sangai is the symbol of a prized possession of the state.
  1. Name — sangai (sa“animal” and ngai “in awaiting”)
  • By nature, the deer, particularly the males, even when running for its life stops occasionally and looks back as if he is waiting for someone and hence the name

  2. The humus of phumdi is black in color and very spongy with large number of pores. It floats with 4/5 part under water.

Sangai festival

  • The festival is named after the State animal, Sangai, the brow-antlered deer found only in Manipur.
  • It started in 2010 and has grown over the years into a big platform for Manipur to showcase its rich tradition and culture to the world.
  • However , The Tourism Festival, since 2010 has been renamed as the Sangai Festival as Sangai is the state animal of Manipur.
  • While , Every edition of the festival showcases the tourism potential of the state in the field of arts & culture, handloom, handicrafts, indigenous sports, cuisine, music and adventure sports.
  • It is labelled as the grandest festival of the State and promotes Manipur as a world class tourism destination.

About The Keibul Lamjao Conservation Area :

  • The Keibul Lamjao Conservation Area represents an extraordinary story of natural antiquity, diversity, beauty and human attachment.
  • Keibul Lamjao Conservation Area (KLCA) comprises of a core area of Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) (40 sq km) and a buffer of Loktak Lake (140 sq km) and Pumlen Pat (43 sq. km).
  •  The property area along with buffer area is located in the southern part of Bishnupur district and eastern part of Thoubal district of Manipur, India.
