What’s in news?

The data regard the Indian diaspora were tabled in parliament.

Key data’s:

  • Tabled by: The data was tabled by the Ministry of External Affairs in Lok Sabha.
  • Total number: As per the data, over 1.36 crore Indian nationals living abroad.
  • Preferred country: Most of the Indians were staying in United Arab Emirates with 34,20,000 Indians – comprise about one-fourth of all Indians abroad.
  • Other countries: The UAE is followed by;
    • Saudi Arabia (25,94,947)
    • The USA (12,80,000)
    • Kuwait (10,29,861)
    • Oman (7,79,351)
    • Qatar (7,56,062)
    • Nepal (5,00,000)
    • UK (3,51,000)
    • Singapore (3,50,000)
    • Bahrain (3,23,292)
  • Remittance: A total of $76.4 billion was received as remittances from Indians abroad during 2018-19 – RBI data.
  • Mortal remains: In a separate question regard the mortal remains of the Indians across various countries, the Minister replied that, around 21,930 Indians from 125 countries have been brought back to India between the period of 2015-19.
  • Nodal agency: Regarding the transportation of the mortal remains to India, CPV (Consular, Passport and Visa) division of the Ministry is the nodal agency which take care of the process – from abroad to their home town.
  • CPV division coordinates with all the missions / posts abroad.

Indian Diaspora:

  • Who are they? A group of people who are with Indian Origin or Indian Citizens.
  • It includes – Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI).
  • In 2015, PIO and OCI card holders were merged under OCI category.

Data to know:

Know India Programme:

  • Edition: Since 2004, the Ministry of External Affairs conducted 53 editions and last edition – 54th edition was conducted in the month of August 2019.
  • Participants: The overall participants were 40 Indian Origin youth {Male – 14 and Female – 26} from 9 countries.
  • Aim: The programme is to engage and make students and young professionals of Indian Diaspora in the age group of 18-30 years.
  • Objective: The objectives of this programme are;
    • Give Indian origin youth exposure to various aspects of contemporary India’s forms of art, heritage and culture.
    • Promote awareness on different facets of life in India and the progress made by country in various fields such as industry, education, science and technology, information & communication technology (ICT), climate and power and renewable energy etc.


  • A remittance is a transfer of money, often by a foreign worker to an individual in their home country.
  • It is being considered as one of the largest financial inflows into the developing countries like India.
